Questions, questions

I asked for questions.

Here is what I got

So what do you do for meals? Do you make your own or does the camp provide them?
Yes.
98% of the time there is a least one group at camp. When there is a group there is food. When there is food we (the Program, ie the teachers, aka the Naturalists) get to eat in the cafeteria. We also have a kitchen in our house, that is stocked from cafeteria extras, as well as our own purchases. When there is no one at camp, we get a meal stipend of $3, and usually someone on staff invites us to dinner (though I suspect that may happen less once training ends, and we start the program next week.

What's your room like? Do you have roomies or are you in a single?
I am in a house on campus with 6 guys. Two single rooms, and two doubles. I have one of the doubles. One of the guys also has a place in town, so he is around mostly at work and when he has to work a late evening. My room is tiny and separated from the house (converted garage/laundry room. There is a washer/dryer upstairs). While it is small it heats up quickly and stays toasty through out the night.

Again, I am working on getting pics to you all.

PICS and SUCH

Pics: maybe delayed a tad. I have like 170 on my camera (thanks again Stephens). But I have to find a comp to dump em on, before I can post.

Weather: It is chilly but unseasonably dry. We had a couple of days of rain, but its been clear most days. It is in the 50s, but with layers and a good coat I have been fine.

Church: Only been here two weeks, and have been to the same church in the AM, and the same "small group" in the PM-both on Sunday. AM is interesting as the church is currently between pastors (of course they have grown by 250 people during this time-so its obviously a church that is very much alive. There is a group that goes to lunch after AM services, but I miss Charo and Athen's West. The small group is 30-40 people, and its the 25-35 crowd. Intimate singing led by some super talented people (its no "Micheal Stephens Worship Experience" but it will have to do), and then a short less on Isaiah. That's right we are going through the book of Isaiah. And backwards at that. I came in on the second week, and the focus has been on Isaiah and how it applies to the concepts of Christ, Messiahship, and our salvation. Kinda digging it so far.

I may shop around just to see what else is out there. Only two other staff are at this church, and I am not sure if that is ideal or not, just yet. I am thinking of going to the church of the NBA next week. I haven't been yet this season.

Questions: Not sure what else to tell you. More training this week, and the kids show up next week. So what do you wanna know? Give me a topic for the next blog.

It starts

Ok, I had three whole diatribes written in my head about the moving of the Lord to bring me to Occidental. One centered around Les Miserables and the impact of the stage play on my life, one used Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an object lesson, and the other was about packing.

But this is the first time I have had computer access and time to type. And I only have 15 minutes before dinner. So it will be short (yeah right) and sweet.

What I am doing:
I am an Naturalist (aka Outdoor educator) at a Christian Camp in Northern California. The camp hosts/runs a campground for outside groups just like any other campground around. Along side this they run one week science camps for 5th and 6th graders from local schools. There are a handful of Christian schools that come up, and our program changes to reflect this. However, the majority of the year we host public schools. This means that we can answer any questions the kids' have, but we can't outright evangelize. Though there are tons of Bible verses posted around camp. One free time activity is called Route 66. The kids can choose to do is to find the 66 verses (one from each book in the Bible dealing with God in nature or the nature of God) posted around camp.

Where I am doing this:
We are in the middle of a Redwood forest.

What you want to see:
pictures are coming soon! I promise. The sun goes down early, so its hard to match my free time with any amount of light.

Why you won't hear from me much for a couple of weeks.

The next two weeks (this and next) are training, going over the lay of camp, the lessons, the rope courses, and all that good stuff. Nothing, literally, to write home about. When I am not in training, we are spending a lot of time hanging out as a staff and getting to know one another.

There are six guys and two girls on staff (five and two live on campus) the rest are on call subs (if you want to work at a camp, let me know we still have openings.

Okay, its now dinner time.

I will write more when I can, and post some pics as soon as I can get some decent ones.

Serving Him with you, but now I am just a little further away!
Jesse
